DID YOU KNOW:
In Canada more than 75% of Injury related Emergency Room visits among children, birth - 4yrs old occur in the home and that such injuries are largely predictable & preventable events.
Unprotected exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause skin damage, eye damage, immune system suppression, and cancer. Even people as young as 20 can develop skin cancer.
Some people think that if they have a t-shirt on then they are protected, unfortunately they are not; a 100% cotton t-shirt has as little as 5% UV protection and even less when wet.
Sun exposure damages the eye as well as the skin, even one day in the sun can result in a burned cornea. Cumulative exposure can lead to cataracts later in life.
Shade is one of the best defenses against the sun's ultraviolet rays; try to keep in the shade between 11:00am and 3:00pm
A properly installed car seat can reduce the risk of serious injury or death by as much as 75%, no matter how right you may think the car seat is installed in your vehicle, drop by and have it checked.
Once your vehicle has been involved in a collision, you need to replace your child's car seat; whether it has been damaged or not; there may be stress points that are not visible to the eye.
Rear facing car seats should not be tethered or in contact with the vehicles front seats, front to back movement of the seat is very important and no more than 1/2" movement side to side at point of attachment.
The longer you can rear face an infant (up to 30 lbs.) the better it is for the development of the child. In the rear facing position the seat takes most of the impact not the child - forward facing the child takes the impact as the seat has no movement at all. In the rear facing position the child's seat should be able to move slightly front to back without being obstructed by the vehicle seat.
That Snowsuits are not recommended for children that are in the 5 point harness system in their car seats - with snowsuits we as parents/caregivers cannot tighten the harness properly which should only be 1 finger width between the child's collar bone and the harness. Chest clip should be at arm pit level.
The new law states a child should be in a car seat til 8 yrs.old, 80 lbs. or 4'9"; the weight and height are the most important factors; not the age. An 8 year old may only weigh 65 lbs.; if the 8 year old 4' 9" child can sit properly in the back seat of the vehicle and the shoulder strap fit proper then they do not require to be in a booster seat. Children 13 years old and younger should always sit in the back seat of the vehicle.
All Stairway gates should be mounted top and bottom of stairs to be SAFE, we also carry Installation Kits so you don't have to drill into the banister, the kits are appropiate for most situations. One kit does two sides; banister to banister, banister to drywall and even wrought iron. By attaching the gate directly to the drywall (with the movement of the gate) it could damage the wall and in return loosen the gate, by installing the kit on the drywall side then it takes the stress off the wall and only requires you to drill and plug two holes as opposed to 4 or more that the gate requires.
Pressure gates are not recommended at all on stairs (top or bottom) as the child could get thru or worse fall with the gate. Pressure gates are only recommended between rooms, not on stairs.
